As batik-making has proved a lucrativeemployment to those who have already takenit up, it is to be hoped that Americans willnot be behind in developing batik. The bold barbaric designs made by thenatives of Java have usually been adhered to,but there is no reason why other motifs shouldnot be developed. Mrs. Wegerif Granesteinmakes many of her designs after Lart Nouveaustyle, which is still so popular in Europe.In this country it would seem more appro-priate to develop it along Indian lines. Thecrude designs would lend themselves to thetechnique of this interesting art. The actual process of batik - making isprimitive in the extreme. It is merely theprotection of certain parts of the material bythe application of hot wax. The material isimmersed in dye, which does not colour theparts protected by the wax.
